For immediate publication 9 February 2023

Brisbane Genki Market is now on two Sundays a month!

Brisbane Genki Market is a cross cultural showcase of arts and crafts, new and second hand goods and amazing street food, all with a uniquely Asian flavour.

The growth of this little market has been huge since its beginning early in 2021, and due to demand for stalls it’s now being held on two Sundays every month from 10am to 3pm. We advise checking our social media for dates.

A gift shopper’s paradise with many items under $20, the emphasis is on local, handmade and artisanal goods.

You can find super cute crocheted creations, jewellery, Japanese style ceramics, gift cards and handmade journals.

There are young artists selling their own tees and tote bags, sticker sheets and stationery.

Some stalls sell houseplants and terrariums, and there’s even a stall selling new and preloved vinyl records.

The scrumptious street food at Brisbane Genki Market has a Japanese influence with takoyaki (octopus fritter balls), taiyaki (fish-shaped filled sweet pastry), dango (skewered mochi with a range of flavours and toppings), matcha drinks and cakes being some of the regular favourites.

Many of the market days also feature performances by Brisbane J-pop idol group Melody Parade, which attracts a large fan base of J-pop fans and cosplayers.

Genki Market takes place right next door to Japanese grocers Genki Mart in Charlotte Street, Brisbane CBD.

Brisbane Genki Market: Two Sundays every month, 10am – 3pm, at 123 Charlotte St Brisbane.

The Brisbane Sunday market with a uniquely Asian flavour

Brisbane Genki Market is a cross cultural showcase of arts and crafts, new and second hand goods and amazing street food, all with a uniquely Asian flavour.

Held on the last Sunday of every month (10am – 3pm) in Brisbane CBD, the market has rapidly grown in the number of stall holders and the variety of wares and food on offer since its beginning early in 2021.

With an emphasis on local, artisanal goods, you can find crochet and macramé creations including plant hangers (plants too), jewellery, ceramics, gift cards and art.

Some stalls sell a curated range of beautiful imported goods such as Japanese ceramics and writing sets, and there’s even a stall selling new and preloved vinyl records.

Much of the delectable street food at Brisbane Genki Market has a Japanese influence with takoyaki (octopus fritter balls), taiyaki (fish-shaped filled sweet pastry), dango (skewered mochi with a range of flavours and toppings), and matcha cakes being just some of the regular favourites. You’ll also find delicious homemade cookies, confectionery and hot drinks.

Right next door to Japanese grocery store Genki Mart in Charlotte Street, the market surrounds has the feel of a Japanese city back alley, with its bamboo wall cladding and Japanese paper lanterns.

Genki Mart owner and co-founder of Brisbane Genki Market Mitch Fujimoto says he started the market because there were a lot of local people with unique skills creating art, pottery, jewellery and other products – who were looking for an outlet to be able to sell direct to the public.

“I hope that Genki Market will be a stepping stone to them having their own stores one day. Yes, there are other markets around but they have a few hurdles to joining. We had a carpark that nobody uses on Sundays, so I thought, ‘Why not?’” Mitch says.

“I like the market because it has built a community now. It’s got a positive feeling about it. Every time a market ends I have that feeling of achieving something really good!”

Brisbane Genki Market: The last Sunday of every month, 10am – 3pm, at 123 Charlotte St Brisbane.
